چکیده

We present proper motions obtained from a dual frequency, six-epoch, VLBA polarization experiment monitoring a sample of 12 blazars. The observations were made at 15 GHz and 22 GHz at bi-monthly intervals over 1996. Ten of the eleven sources for which proper motion could be reliably determined are superluminal. Only J2005+77 has no superluminal components. Three sources (OJ 287, J1224+21, and J1512−09) show motion faster than 10h−1c, requiring γpattern of at least 10h−1 (H0 = 100h km s−1 Mpc−1). We compare our results to those in the literature and find motions outside the previously observed range for four sources. While some jet components exhibit significant non-radial motion, most motion is radial. In at least two sources there are components moving radially at significantly different structural position angles. In five of six sources (3C 120, J1224+21, 3C 273, 3C 279, J1512−09, and J1927+73) that have multiple components with measurable proper motion, the innermost component is significantly slower than the others, suggesting that acceleration occurs in the jet. In the motions of individual components we observe at least one decelerating motion and two “bending” accelerations which tend to align their motions with larger scale structure. We also discuss in detail our procedures for obtaining robust kinematical results from multi-frequency VLBI data spanning several epochs.

Multifrequency VLBA Monitoring of 3 C 273 during the INTEGRAL Campaign in 2003 I . Kinematics of the Parsec Scale Jet from 43 GHz Data

In this first of a series of papers describing polarimetric multifrequency Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) monitoring of 3C 273 during a simultaneous campaign with the INTEGRAL γ-ray satellite in 2003, we present 5 Stokes I images and source models at 7 mm. We show that a part of the inner jet (1–2 milliarcseconds from the core) is resolved in a direction transverse to the flow, and we analyse ...

MOJAVE: Monitoring of jets in active galactic nuclei with VLBA experiments. III. Deep VLA images at 1.4 Ghz

TheMOJAVE blazar sample consists of the 133 brightest, most compact radio-loud AGNs in the northern sky, and it is selected on the basis of VLBA 2 cm correlated flux density exceeding 1.5 Jy (2 Jy for declinations south of 0 ) at any epoch between 1994 and 2003. Since 1994 we have been gathering VLBA data on the sample to measure superluminal jet speeds and to better understand the parsec-scale...

Parsec-scale Jets in Extragalactic Radio Sources1

Observations of parsec-scale radio jets associated with active galactic nuclei are reviewed, with a particular emphasis on high-luminosity core-dominated sources where the most detailed information on individual objects exists. Extensive imaging surveys with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) have made possible a morphologic classification of compact radio sources and systematic studies o...

The University of Michigan Centimeter-Band All Stokes Blazar Monitoring Program: Single-Dish Polarimetry as a Probe of Parsec-Scale Magnetic Fields

The University of Michigan 26-m paraboloid was dedicated to obtaining linear polarization and total flux density observations of blazars from the mid-1960s until June 2012, providing an unprecedented record tracking centimeter-band variability over decades at 14.5, 8.0, and 4.8 GHz for both targeted objects and members of flux-limited samples. In the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s, and during ...
